Coal mining has a history that goes back thousands of years. However never was it so booming than during the industrial revolution in the 19th and 20th century when steam engines were invented and used and when people needed coal to heat their homes and produce electricity. Although time change the fact that we relied on coal generated energy, did not changed.
Since the industrial revolution of the 18th century it became easier to find, mine and transport coal this also meant that it became an essential part of life not only with just its output but with the jobs it generated too.
Prior the development of this project, I planned what form of photography I would like to explore this subject in, it was then I decided that bringing a combination of portraits, still life, audio and landscapes together, I would be able to explore the history of coal mining with people, locations and objects.
